Tailgate N Go is a family-owned and operated business based in Grand Junction, Colorado. After an unorganized family camping trip, Ron Johnson and his children Kobe and Taylor decided there had to be a better way. So they created Tailgate N Go – a customizable portable outdoor kitchen and dry box that is fully equipped to store all the camping essentials, allowing you to cook, prep, store and more during tailgates and camping trips – all from a single box.
1. What is Tailgate N Go?
Tailgate N Go is a portable modular outdoor kitchen and dry box that you can take anywhere tailgating fishing camping even disaster relief. You can set it up in the back porch to the Backwoods in 12 seconds. With our patent magazine, there are 10 different locations to put attachments such as grills griddle sink stoves. We are completely based in Colorado we are 100% made in the USA
2. How did you come up with the idea?
We were on a camping trip and I was in charge of packing all of the food and supplies to cook we couldn’t find salt oil or a spatula to make burgers and my dad said where is your chuck box? So we came home and cut up a tote from target to start our adventure with Tailgate N Go about nine prototypes later we sold at six tradeshows and now are featured on Shark Tank
3. How did your experience on Shark Tank help your business?
Shark Tank was surreal. My brother described it as if we didn’t walk in the room, yet floated. It’s every entrepreneur’s dream scenario; your invention set up on stage while you negotiate with potential investors who could take your dream and give it wings. Matt was our target shark. With an NFL background and respected successful entrepreneur himself, it was hard to not want to work with him. The thrill will never end working with Matt because he is so bold and strategic. We can’t even believe how lucky we are and how a small idea turned into a business and how that business brought us experiences you could never buy.
4. What advice would you give budding entrepreneurs?
I would say to never give up and know that there is going to be hard times no matter your success or not. There will always be stress with being successful or not being successful you just have to believe. My father has always said you learn a business from working at the bottom to the top, here we are with an idea that started from a camping trip and a plastic tote.
